Key Takeaway

EF24 is a lab-made version of curcumin (the yellow compound in turmeric). Chemists built nine new variants; in dish tests on colon cancer cells, one beat both EF24 and cisplatin, a common chemo drug. Very early work — no animals or patients yet.

The team made nine N-benzoyl analogs of EF24 (variants with a swapped chemical group) and tested them on HT-29 colon cancer cells with an MTT assay — a color-based count of living cells — at 24 and 48 hours. Four (compounds 4, 5, 7, 10) were significantly cytotoxic — they killed cancer cells. Compound 10 beat both EF24 and cisplatin. In molecular docking (computer simulations of how a molecule fits its target), it bound best to glyoxalase I, an enzyme cancer cells use to neutralize toxic waste.

The abstract gives no exact potency numbers, and the authors say animal and pharmacokinetic studies (how the body handles a drug) are still needed. ## In plain words

**What happened:** Chemists built nine new variants of EF24, a man-made improved curcumin, and tested them on colon cancer cells in lab dishes.

**Why it matters:** Natural curcumin is weak and poorly absorbed, so chemists keep redesigning it. One variant killed colon cancer cells better than EF24 and a chemo drug in dishes, and fit best into a self-defense enzyme in computer simulations.

**How strong is the evidence:** Very early: synthesis plus cells in dishes — no animals, no people, no exact potency numbers in the summary. A real drug candidate is years away, if ever.

**What it means for you:** Nothing changes today — these are not available or proven treatments. Do not self-experiment; curcumin supplements are not these lab compounds.
